May I join even if I don’t have any woodworking experience at all?
Yes. One of our knowledgeable staff members will walk you through the operation and safety procedures for each tool in the shop. For those just getting started, we recommend that you take our Fundamentals of Woodworking class. As a bonus, you will receive a 50% discount off of the initiation fee. Check with the staff for details.
Will I feel out of place there, I don’t have a lot of experience at woodworking?
No, unless you feel out-of-place everywhere else. We are forever hearing from new members how pleasantly surprised they are at the camaraderie they encounter in the shop. There is an eagerness to share, advise and assist that seems to be innate in many in our community of woodworkers and staff. Members are happy to see new faces, share in your new-found love of wood-working. And we all remember where we started.
What do I need as far as equipment or supplies?
Very little, a tape measure, a pencil, and an idea. You may bring your own wood and supplies, or purchase them at our retail store. Our staff is friendly, knowledgeable and eager to assist you in getting started.
May I operate a business out of the club?
Our shop is not a cabinet shop nor does it lend itself well to being used as a production facility due to the variety of projects going on at any given time. Though we do have members who are selling what they make at the shop we cannot in fairness to others accommodate high-volume production. It is at the staff’s discretion as to what constitutes high-volume.
Is it safe?
Safety is our paramount concern. With proper instruction and a good measure of common sense, woodworking can be as safe as crossing the street. We rarely have an injury of any sort at the shop and we strive to keep it that way. It is every member’s responsibility to abide by the safety rules, to ask for guidance if they feel unsure about a tool or procedure, and to keep other’s safety in mind. There is a wealth of knowledge (available in our store and elsewhere) addressing the safe operation of tools and woodshop etiquette.
Are there people there to coach me?
A Staff member is always available to answer questions and to provide advice, as conditions allow. For more extensive one-on-one assistance we offer “personal training” packages. All members benefit from the knowledge shared within the shop and veterans are usually eager to help and advice.
May I store stuff at the studio?
Yes. The shop has a storage facility for reasonably sized projects. Storage tags may be purchased and are allotted on a size per piece basis. Larger projects may require more $$. We also have a limited number of lockers available for rent.
