Wood Finishing: Understanding the Basics W/ Mitch Kohanek

MK

Finishing wood can cause a lot of anxiety. It could be because you don’t know what you don’t know. Your confidence level of wood finishing is not at the same level as your wood working. You have spent many hours on the woodworking, and a few minutes into the finishing process you have a mess. This class will help you take the fear out of wood finishing. Mitch will explain the fundamentals of the wood finishing process which will lead to a more productive wood working experience. You have developed your own wood working system, the next step is to develop your own wood finishing system. Decide what you want your project to look like, and decide what level of protection is needed for your projects. You then need to understand what your choices are for dyes, stains, glazes, toners, sealers, fillers, oils, shellac, lacquer, varnish, urethane and waterbase coatings. What are your options for ragging on a finish, French Polishing, choosing and using brushes and or spraying equipment? With all that knowledge you then start de-selecting what you don’t need to develop your system. On Friday and Saturday,  Mitch will intermix lecture with demonstrations of wood finishing procedures.   Attendees will be allowed to use some of these two days to incorporate some “hands on” learning as well. Small pieces of wood (not projects) can be brought in to work on using this new knowledge.

On Sunday, an open lab will conducted for attendees to return for more hands on learning. A question and answer session will also be included.

Fine finishing begins before the lumber selection and before you build the project. Learn what your system should be using the correct materials and sequence of finishing steps.

Practice does not make perfect….. Perfect practice makes perfect. Come to learn how to practice perfect.
