Turn a hollow form without the hollowing
Aug. 6th & 7th, 2012
9am-5pm
$330
Hollow forms turned through a small opening were always a challenge for me to turn. In this class we turn hollow forms, using green wood, much like you make lidded boxes only we will glue the lid back on. Not only is there less risk of turning through the side of your vessel but it is also easier to gauge the wall thickness as well as remove the shavings from the inside. The class will focus on techniques for making a precise joint to help insure the piece stays together as it dries. This vessel will also have handles and we will cover ways to turn them so the vessel form seems to flow under the handle continuously
Turn a Multi-Axis Square Bowl
Aug. 8th & 9th
9am-5pm
$330
In this class we will turn a bowl using some basic multi-axis techniques. One of the difficulties of multi-axis turning is overcoming the interrupted cut when you are turning more air than wood. We will practice techniques for dealing with this interrupted cut. Once the outer form is turned we will then build a custom jig using 2x4s, deck screws, masking tape and hot glue to turn the inside of the bowl. This class will help to illustrate my approach to turning and the use of the lathe as a tool for shaping wood, not just for making it round.
