Learn how to create relief carvings, in which wood is carved away around an object to make it look like it is standing off the surface of the wood. Students will learn how to transfer designs onto the wood, outline the design use stop cuts to remove surrounding wood, rounding, flattening the background, shaping the figure, layering elements of the design, undercutting for dramatic shadows, final clean up, and finishing. Participants will use the techniques to make a relief carving leaf design and a chosen design. This class is taught by John L and Ed K, members of the Montgomery County Carvers Club.
The cost of the class includes 3 carving blanks, and a 5-piece relief carving kit including v-tools and assorted gouges.
Participants should bring a fixed blade carving knife and hand safety protection.
PREREQUISTE: Introduction to Whittling and Carving or prior experience with carving tools, basic cuts, techniques and safety.
