FAQ

Most lumber is sold by the board foot. Pre-milled lumber, large slabs, smaller craft boards and turning stock are priced by the piece.

A board foot is a volumetric measure; one board foot is 12” X 12” X 1”. To find the size of your board in BF, multiply the length, width, and thickness together and divide by 144.  For example a board that is 60” long by 6” wide and 2” thick is 5 BF (60” x 6” x 2” = 720 / 144). Easy peasy! (We keep calculators in the lumber aisle in case head math isn’t your thing.)

Board foot is the unit of measure for rough lumber (before drying and planning with no adjustments) or planed/surfaced lumber.

Figured lumber is inscribed with special numbers that you can only see if you are a master woodworker.

Wood gone wild! Figure refers to the appearance of wood, as seen on a longitudinal surface. Types of figure include angel step, “bear scratches,” bird’s eye, blister, burl, curl, ribbon curl, dimple, fiddleback, flame, “ghost”, pin stripe, pommele, quilted, tiger stripe, and spalted. Anything but plain!

For sheet goods, we will do up to three cuts on the panel saw for free (crosscuts on 4×8 plywood sheets only, no rips; anything goes on 5×5 plywood). We’ll also rough cut lumber to fit your car.

If you require cut list dimensions on a table saw to match your project requirements, then a milling charge may be applied. Our minimum milling fee is $25 for 15 minutes based on our standard rate of $100/per hour.

5-9 sheets of plywood gets you a 10% discount; more than 10 sheets gets 15% off.

No, but U-Haul is across the street.

Yes!  Our custom labor rate is $100/hr.

Generally people use them for table tops, but the possibilities are endless!

We can provide any level of custom fabrication to our slabs, from edge trimming and milling to complete finished pieces.   Our custom labor rate is $100/hr.

As long as you bought your lumber here, we will do whatever you want us to do to it. Again, labor is $100/hr.

Plainsawn vs true quartersawn vs quarter and rift sawn

Because there is more waste in sawing it to get the grain perpendicular to the face, so each log yields fewer boards.
